FAQs

League Format and Structure

What is the format of TEAM GOLF?

TEAM GOLF is a structured, season-long league utilizing the Two-Person Best Shot (Scramble) format. Both players hit a shot, and the team selects the best ball to play the next shot from, which is designed to be strategic and maximize partner strengths.

What is the structure of the league competition?

The season is divided into four primary phases:

  • The scratch Position Round to establish initial team handicaps
  • Flighting (teams are grouped by skill level).
  • Pool Play (four 9-hole competition rounds).
  • Playoffs (two 18-hole final rounds).

Why do we play play 18 holes and score for 9?  This scoring system is designed to prevent a single dominant team from taking an insurmountable lead early in the season by preventing “Runaway” Seasons, since awarding most of the season-long points to the 9-hole placements forces a team to perform consistently well on both the front and back nine. This method encourages consistency because it makes every 9-hole stretch crucial and ensures the most consistent teams win, rather than those with only a few exceptionally high-scoring 18-hole rounds, which ultimately increases competition by keeping more teams in contention for a longer time

Competition and Fairness

How is fair competition ensured?

Fair competition is ensured through a Team Golf Handicap System and a Flighting process that groups teams into competitive levels based on their skill after the initial Position Round. This means teams only compete directly against others of a similar caliber.

How does the Flight system handle teams that dominate or struggle?

Team Golf uses “Relegation” (moving down a Flight) and “Mandatory Advancement” (moving up a Flight) to dynamically move teams to a more appropriate, balanced Flight if they consistently struggle or excel after the initial placement.

What is the Standard for Relegation and Elevation or Reducing Handicaps

Our league employs a dynamic Relegation and Elevation system to ensure competitive balance. Teams will experience Elevation to a higher flight based on outstanding performance, or Relegation to a lower flight if their results warrant it, creating exciting movement throughout the season. Before any elevation, we may also reduce a team’s handicap (within their current Net Flight) based on high performance metrics. The determination of these movements is driven by a carefully designed algorithm that analyzes team performance data. While transparency is valued, the precise mathematical framework of this algorithm remains proprietary to Team Golf. This approach ensures fairness and prevents any potential manipulation of the system, upholding the integrity of the competition for all participants.

Does my team use a handicap after the Position Rounds?

The Championship Flight and Elite Flight play without handicaps (Gross scoring). All other flights will compete in both Net and Gross classes during Pool Play and the Playoffs.

How does the Handicapping work to place us in a flight from the Position Round?

Your flight handicap is calculated using a Team Golf formula applied to your Best Shot Gross Score from the Position Round.

GrossMinus 9 Hole RatingMutiplied by 62.5Divided by 9 hole slopeMultiplied by .5Rounded
Sample73.5/262.5135/2X .5Team Hdcp
392.25140.632.081.041

The final handicap is determined by the following formula:

Flight Handicap = Round((((Gross Score – 9-Hole Rating) x 62.5) / 9-Hole Slope) x 0.5)

  • The constant 62.5 represents one-half of the World Handicap System (WHS) suggested slope for equation division.
  • The result is then rounded to the nearest whole number to determine your final flight handicap.

Note on Course Data:

In the event that an official 9-Hole Slope and Rating cannot be obtained for a course, the certified 18-Hole Slope and Rating values will be halved for use in this calculation as in the example above.

Fees, Prizes, and Perks

How much does it cost to register?

The league registration fee is $150 per team, covering prizes, custom logo design, administrative costs, and entry into all Pool Play and Playoff rounds.

What other costs are involved besides the registration fee?

Teams are responsible for paying the discounted green fees directly to the host course for each round they participate in. The registration fee covers administrative costs and the prize pool only.

Where does my entry fee go towards?

Your entry fee contributes to administrative support, course liaisons, the prize pool, and ongoing software and platform development.

What prizes and perks do teams receive?

Teams can earn Merchandise Credit Payouts weekly for winning their flight during Pool Play. Additionally, every registered team receives a Free Custom Team Logo design, exclusive gear discounts, and access to the official league website for tracking stats

Players and Substitutes

Can I play in more than one division?

Yes, a player may compete on teams in multiple divisions, provided they play a separate Position Round for each pairing to establish an accurate, specific Team Golf Handicap.

Can we use substitute players?

Yes, you may have one (1) substitute that may be registered per team, and all subs must be finalized before the start of Position Play, with no exceptions. These susbstitutes MUST have active WHS index prior to the start of Position Play.

What are the requirements for substitutes?

Each substitute must possess a valid WGH (World Handicap System) or similar index, which must be validated by a League official or a Golf Professional to ensure competition integrity.
